In three years, a young woman from Hounslow, west London named Jemma Beale has falsely accused 15 men of rape. One of her victims was sent to prison for seven years and she has left many lives in ruins. Many people may have expected some kind of retribution or justice in response to such terrible acts, but we’re afraid that’s not what’s happening here. Instead, it seems as though courts in England do not have pity for liars and it’s hard to disagree with that policy. Beale’s first victim was a man she met at Heathrow Airport in January 2012. She invited him back to her flat but when he fell asleep she stabbed him in the lower back with a knife and raped him. The complainant was confused as to what had happened, said prosecutor John Price QC during her trial. She knew something sexual had taken place but felt confused by what she thought had happened. Five days later police tracked down Beale and arrested her for grievous bodily harm and rape.
