One of the best things about social media is making comments, sharing news and expressing yourself with memes. Consequently, many people tend to get out of control and don’t always understand there may be consequences. For instance, one insulting comment about a stranger can lead to bigger problems no one ever saw coming. The truth is people are often offended by something that may seem small to some but may actually be rude in their eyes. In fact, this is exactly what happened to model Dani Mathers.
Back in 2018, Dani Mathers decided to take a photo of a 71-year-old woman. Her carefree nature then led her to write a caption that said, “If I can’t under this then you can’t” on social media. Although Dani likely meant to be playful and humorous, the woman clearly didn’t see it that way. In her mind, the caption had a negative impact on her in some way. Soon afterwards, Dani was arrested and given the choice between doing community service consisting of 30 days of graffiti removal or 45 days in prison. Since the community service seemed to be a better choice, she took it. As she’d only finished 56 out of 240 hours of her service, the Los Angeles judge who sentenced her told her this wasn’t enough.
The judge reminded Dani of what would happen if she didn’t finish her hours. Since Ms. Mathers had no desire to do jail time, she chose to take the matter more seriously and complete her 240 community service hours. Despite the fact that her probation sentence will last until 2020 and she can’t post unauthorized pictures of people, she stays positive. Instead of being a hindrance to her happiness, her community service is a new source of inspiration for her to spread positivity in the world. She went on to say, “It was a stupid choice,” it was wrong and she regretted it. On the bright side, Ms. Mathers learned to think before she speaks and feels motivated to teach others to do the same. Being forced to do community service for posting a seemingly innocent caption on social media may seem harsh, but Dani pushes through it all with a smile and commits to humbly change her ways.
Since Dani chooses to maintain a positive attitude through it all, she chose to directly apologize to the victim. After all, making fun of someone and body shaming them can be harmful to their health and well-being. Meanwhile, Dani continues to feel deep sorrow for her behavior. But, she does seem to have become a better person and learned an important lesson from her mistake. It’s wise to think twice before making fun of others on social media even if you may not mean any harm at all.
