When someone is tragically killed, I think most people will agree that playing the blame game does not help anyone in the long run but that has not stopped people from pointing the finger at the mayor after officer Ella French was murdered during a routine traffic stop in Chicago. The exact details are not clear but what we do know is she had stopped a car driven by 21 year old Emonte Brown & his 22 year old brother Eric Morgan. The two have since been charged with her death. Emonte faces a wide variety of charges such as the attempted first-degree murder of a cop along with regular FDM. Eric, meanwhile, has been charged with unlawful weapons use by someone with a criminal record & aggravated unlawful weapon usage. The incident also resulted in the injury of her partner who is now recovering at UC medical center. but he is expected to make a full recovery. The charges were first announced back on Monday & they were due in court the day after that for their arraignment. They were not eligible to receive bail.
This is due to the fact that they were both on probation at the time of the incident. In the aftermath of this, many have turned their back on the mayor & placed all of the blame on her for this heinous crime. This is due to the fact that she signed off on a bill that would cut $80 million from the police budget in the wake of the BLM movement. The father of French has also denounced the mayor due to the part she played in helping to defund the police & firmly believes that she is part of the problem. In a recent statement, the mayor he said she is shaken by what happened & hopes that this type of tragedy will never occur again. Anthony Napolitano, one of the former cops & an alderman, has said that while he does think a lot of negative ramifications have resulted from these budgets cuts he does not hold her directly responsible for what happened out there. He went on to say that he does not think she is anti-cop but does hold the city council in contempt.
This blood, as he is quick to point out, is on their hands as there have now been more than 39 attacks against cops just this year alone. So he believes their words are leading to a rise in hate crimes against officers & creating this anti-cop sentiment that seems to be rising across the nation. As the situation continues to unfold, police have found that one of the brothers was injured in the altercation thanks to a gunshot wound. In spite of this, they are both expected to show up in court on Tuesday. In a recent post on Facebook, the Chicago PD notes the bravery that both of these cops exhibited & are grateful for all the years she served on the force. Also, they are still grieving the loss of one of their fallen heroes. It is not yet clear what will become of the brothers but if found guilty, both are expected to receive a life sentence. Authorities do not believe the death penalty will be on the table.
